1,049 Films was created in response to the growing need for a film examining the deficiencies
in current United States Marriage Laws. In 1997, the General Accounting Office – the
non-partisan research division of federal government – was asked by some members of
Congress to study the impact of marriage laws on people who are gay or lesbian. The GAO
uncovered 1,049 rights, rules and privileges afforded to married heterosexual couples, but
denied to homosexual couples. Hence: the name.
In January of 2004, the GAO produced a new study on the topic and updated the number to
1,138. We are seeking 1,138 screenings, one for every federal recognition denied to same-sex
family. Once TYING THE KNOT enters into distribution, we will add a counter to the website,
representing the number of screenings.
